There are many version of Boeing 737 such as :
First generation :
Boeing 737-100; the first design of 737, entered service in 1969 as 100 passengers short range airliner. Back then, 737-100 designed to compete with DC-9 and BAC-111. Compared to its competitor, 737-100 has six abreast seats rather than five.
Boeing 737-200; stretched version of 737-100 with capacity of 115 passengers. This 737-200 then way exceeded the 100 version on sales amount.
Boeing 737-200 is easily distinguished from other 737 type by its cigar-like engine
Second generation :
Boeing 737-300; entered service in 1984, this 737-300 is the second generation of 737 family that comes with stretched 737-400 and shortened 737-500. Boeing 737-300 has new more efficient CFM turbofan engine and capacity of 141 passengers. Later on, this 737-300/400/500 version got in close competition with Airbus A320 series which have more advanced technologies, more performance and range. But despite of the close competition, Boeing 737-300/400/500 series still held the title of best selling airliners.
Boeing 737-400; a stretched version of 300 version with maximum capacity of 188 passengers. Some version of this 737-400 also featured longer range.
Boeing 737-500; a shortened version of 737-300. With capacity of 100 passengers, 737-500 is a direct replacement for 737-200.

Third generation or 737 next generation :
Boeing 737-600; entered service in 1996, this 737-600 is the third generation 737 or also known as 737 next generation which is more efficient and has new 777-like cockpit. Boeing 737-600 came side by side with stretched 737-700. Boeing 737-600 is a further developed 737-500, the smallest version of 737 family.
Boeing 737-700; entered service in 1996, Boeing 737-700 is a further developed 737-400, the base version of 737 family. Some versions of this 737-700 featured long range option.
Boeing 737-800; entered service in 1998, Boeing 737-800 is a further developed 737-600, the stretched version of 737 family.
Boeing 737-900; the latest and most advanced 737, entered service in 2001. Boeing 737-900 is the largest in 737 family with over 200 passengers capacity.
