A340 has four turbofan engine that more cost efficient for long range flying than a twin engine airliner. With 8500nm/15000km/9300 miles range, a reduced passenger capacity Airbus A340-500 is the longest ranged airliner. That makes A340 on competition with Boeing 747-400 and with advantage of more economical cost than 747-400. Boeing then should make special class of 777-200LR, which came with further range extension than the ER version to compete with Airbus A340-500. Airliners in this ultra-long range class can fly to anywhere in the world directly, making a half earth surface leap.
